Vision Therapy

Vision problems, such as a lazy eye or double vision, can interfere with learning, sports, and even your social life.

Vision therapy is a safe and effective method for developing skills and improving the comfort and function of your eyes.

So why is vision therapy recommended by optometrists?

Vision Therapy Trains Your Eyes to Correct Themselves

No Drugs, No Surgery

This therapy consists of doctor-supervised activities meant to retrain your eyes. It does not alter the anatomy of the eye or the surrounding muscles and is free of any medication.

Available for Both Kids and Adults

You can improve your visual skills at any age. While vision therapy is most often recommended for children, adults can also benefit from improved comfort and more efficient reading skills.

Customizable Treatment Plans

Your optometrist can design an individualized plan to address your specific concerns. Vision therapy can help with a range of conditions, including lazy eye, crossed eyes, trouble focusing, and eye movement disorders.

Eye Misalignments Such as a Lazy Eye Can Have Serious Consequences

Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is the most common cause of vision loss in children. Early treatment can prevent permanent vision loss.

But Is the Treatment Expensive?

Since vision therapy has health benefits, many insurance companies provide coverage for treatment. The final price of your therapy will depend on what issue you are treating and how many sessions you need. A typical vision therapy session costs $100 to $150. For patients without insurance, vision therapy for a lazy eye usually costs about $2,000. In contrast, surgery can cost up to $15,000 or more

Customized Treatment Plans Suited to Your Unique Needs

Your eye doctor can thoroughly evaluate your vision to determine if you are a good candidate for vision therapy. Then, they can design a personalized treatment plan which may include:

  • Corrective lenses
  • Therapeutic lenses
  • Prism lenses
  • Optical filters
  • Eye patches
  • Computer-assisted visual activities

Your treatment will also involve in-office therapy sessions once or twice a week. Generally, a vision therapy session lasts between 30 minutes and one hour. Your doctor may also assign you homework so you can keep practicing during the week. Most patients require 12 to 24 sessions to see results.

Learn More about Your Options

While vision therapy is the least invasive option available for many conditions, there are alternatives. The symptoms of certain eye misalignments can be managed with glasses or contacts. You may also qualify for surgery. However, surgery is more expensive than vision therapy and carries the risk of side effects.

When supervised by an optometrist, vision therapy is a safe way for children and adults to improve their visual skills. Schedule an appointment with an eye doctor today to learn more.
