Your First Visit

Knowing what to expect during your first visit to a new eye doctor can help keep you calm and ensure the appointment runs smoothly. During your first consultation, you will get to know the doctor and the staff. You will also have time to discuss any questions or concerns you have about your vision. New patients typically undergo a comprehensive eye exam to assess the health of their eyes. Your doctor may recommend a new prescription for your existing glasses or contacts as well.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

There are several things you can bring with you to your first appointment to make the visit run as smoothly as possible, including:

  • Your medical or vision insurance card
  • A list of your current medications
  • Some form of identification, such as your driver’s license
  • All corrective eyewear you currently use
  • A copy of your most recent prescription
  • Information about your medical history

You may also want to write down any symptoms you have experienced relating to your vision or eye health. It is important to be communicate with your eye doctor during the first appointment, as active participation can provide better vision care outcomes. Come prepared with questions and concerns you have for your doctor as well.

What to Expect during Your First Visit

The goal of your first appointment is to meet your new doctor and get a sense of your current optical health. While every patient’s experience is different based on their specific needs, there are some basic things you can expect during your first visit to a new eye doctor.

Discussion of Your History

Your eye doctor may ask you about your family and medical history, specifically focusing on your vision and eye health.

Comprehensive Eye Exam

The doctor will check your eyes for risk factors and signs of any ocular diseases. They will also measure various aspects of your eye, such as peripheral vision, eye movements, and the sharpness of your vision.

Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on the exam, you doctor may provide a prescription for vision correction or recommend treatment for another ocular issue. They may also suggest certain eye exercises, changes to your diet, or a prescription for medication.

Fitting for New Glasses or Contacts

If you need corrective lenses for the first time or have experienced changes to your prescription, you may be able to take care of that at the same appointment.

How Long Does the Appointment Last?

A comprehensive eye exam typically takes about an hour, so allow at least 60 minutes for your appointment. It is best to arrive to the office a few minutes early to take care of any paperwork or insurance issues before seeing the doctor. Preparing for your appointment in advance can help speed the process.

Schedule an Appointment

Regular visits to an eye doctor can identify issues with your vision before they become serious. In addition, your doctor can often see signs of other health concerns during an eye exam, including indications of diabetes or a potential stroke. The first step to protecting your vision is scheduling an appointment at an eye doctor today.
