Implantable Collamer Lens

Description

Dr. Sheth describes ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery, a treatment for patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness. When compared with LASIK, ICL can lead to better results in nearsighted patients. It can also make an excellent treatment option for patients who have been told they do not qualify for LASIK due to thin or irregular corneas.

1 00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:17.460 Implantable polymer Lens, or ICL, is a surgery that's predominantly 2 00:00:17.490 --> 00:00:22.260 for moderate to high myopic patients or nearsighted patients. 3 00:00:22.290 --> 00:00:26.540 Those patients are also oftentimes looking for LASIC. 4 00:00:26.570 --> 00:00:30.220 When we compare ICL to LASIC 5 00:00:30.240 --> 00:00:35.340 in that group, the high to moderate myopic patient. 6 00:00:35.370 --> 00:00:40.280 If a patient were to have ICL placed in one eye and LASIC done in the other 7 00:00:40.310 --> 00:00:47.860 eye, oftentimes they would prefer quality of vision in their ICLI. 8 00:00:47.890 --> 00:00:55.100 Another group of patients that ICL is ideal for are those that have been deemed 9 00:00:55.130 --> 00:01:00.340 not a good candidate for LASIC because their corneas were thin or irregular. 10 00:01:00.370 --> 00:01:08.240 Because ICEL isn't planted inside the eye, the thickness of the cornea or 11 00:01:08.270 --> 00:01:11.660 the irregularity of the cornea is not a factor. 12 00:01:11.690 --> 00:01:15.180 So ISIL is an excellent choice in those 13 00:01:15.210 --> 00:01:21.020 patients that have moderate to high nearsightedness 14 00:01:21.050 --> 00:01:24.620 thin corneas, irregular corneas, 15 00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:33.460 and have been turned down for LASIC or looking for the best refractive option 16 00:01:33.490 --> 00:01:39.600 for their prescription range that can give them the best results. 17 00:01:39.880 --> 00:01:47.620 Additionally, ICL, like LASIC, is painless and relatively quick. 18 00:01:47.650 --> 00:01:53.340 The one caveat would be, unlike LASIC, when we do ICL, 19 00:01:53.370 --> 00:01:58.140 because it is an intraocular surgery, we do the two eyes independently. 20 00:01:58.170 --> 00:02:03.900 On different days where LASIC, we usually do both eyes simultaneously. 21 00:02:03.930 --> 00:02:05.850 If you'd like more information on ICL 22 00:02:05.880 --> 00:02:08.840 surgery, please contact my office and make an appointment.
