The LASIK Procedure: What to Expect

Advancements in laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, technology have made the procedure very safe and nearly painless. The laser eye surgery may be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

The LASIK procedure consists of the following steps:

  • Patients are typically given a relaxation aid, such as Valium; the patient is then prepped for surgery, and the eye is numbed using medicated drops.
  • A lid speculum is used to keep the eye open, and an ink marker is used to mark the surface of the eye.
  • A suction ring is applied to the eye to discourage movement that could lead to complications.
  • Depending on whether the patient is undergoing traditional or blade-free LASIK, either a precision instrument called a microkeratome or a laser is used to create a small hinged flap in the surface of the cornea, allowing access to deeper tissue.
  • The surgeon directs the patient to concentrate on a target light for a short amount of time.
  • An excimer laser is used to permanently reshape the cornea, either flattening or steepening its slope depending on the patient's visual error.
  • The corneal flap is replaced and topical anesthetic drops are applied.

Each eye takes about five minutes with the entire procedure generally completed within 15 minutes. Slight stinging or itching may be felt immediately after surgery, as well as blurry vision. No bandages or sutures are needed and healing is rapid. Drastic improvements in vision are typically observed within the first 24 hours after surgery and LASIK patients' vision will continue to improve in the following weeks and even months. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise for a week or so to aid in healing.
